SUCCULENT & CACTUS

Succulent plants are known for its drought tolerant because they stored water in their body. Dragon fruits, Opuntia Species and Peruvian Apple cactus are succulent plants which has a high water usage efficiency five to ten times better than other non succulent plants.

Dragon fruit produces nocturnal flowers that blooms overnight from dust to dawn. It can be hand pollinated or pollinated by insects followed by fruit setting.

Dragon fruit can bears fruit in six to nine months if proper care is given. The one shown in the picture is seven months old. It bore two fruits for the first year. Commercial fruiting is at the 2nd year while heavy fruiting occurs starting in the fourth year onward.

The seedlings below are prickly pears (opuntia sp.). It is seven months old. It bears edible fruits. Good for garden specimen as add-on since it produces heavy flowers followed by red fruits. Fruits can be eaten fresh, use in salads and a good materials for fruit wine.
